Who is Frida Why?

Frida Why is the artistic name of Afroditi Gioti, a contemporary artist from Greece.

I’ve always been fascinated by people, especially through their faces and eyes. I studied photography, worked in tourism for a while, but my real journey began when I started exploring emotion through images.

Women are at the heart of my work. They carry strength and softness at the same time, something I deeply relate to.

During a time of isolation, I began creating digital collages, mixing photography with layers, textures, and emotion. It started as a way to understand what I was feeling, and slowly became my language - how I speak about memory, pain and transformation.

My process now blends photography, digital art and hand-made details. Each piece is an emotional landscape. Intimate, raw and open for others to see themselves in it too.

For me, art is a conversation between the visible and the hidden, between me and you.

    • Post-traumatic Collage ART

I make post-traumatic art that mixes female forms with the textures, walls and streets of the city. My work is about how personal trauma and urban life meet. How our surroundings shape our memories, fears, and who we are. Each piece is a conversation between what’s inside us and the world outside, showing how the city leaves its mark and how trauma can turn that mark into something you can see and feel.

    • Urban spaces as muse and mirror

The city is my inspiration and my mirror. I’m drawn to walls, graffiti, little messages we see every day, signs of life, and human stories that often go unnoticed. These textures mix with people, memories and emotions in my work. For me, urban life isn’t danger. It’s freedom. Freedom to move, to exist, to reinvent yourself. The city’s anonymity lets me explore and reflect, and that’s at the heart of everything I create.

    • Post-trauma as practice

“Post-traumatic” isn’t just a label. It’s a way I work and a way I see. I take experiences of trauma, fear and emotional chaos and turn them into something visual, something that speaks when words can’t. I mix photography, digital collage, sketching, and other media, letting spontaneity meet precision, and chaos meet structure. The result? Work that’s surreal, personal and raw. Pieces that feel alive and real.

    • Layering and experimentation

Each piece is also an experiment in dialogue between mediums. I mix digital collage, photography, textures, sketches, and handmade touches to give it depth and feeling. I work intuitively, letting the piece grow on its own, guided by both instinct and ideas I want to explore.

    • Observation and connection

Outside the studio, I’m always watching and listening. I walk the streets, catch conversations, notice textures and save little urban moments. My art is personal, but it connects.

    • Presence and reclamation

At its core, my work is about presence... Being seen, claiming space and witnessing. It takes what’s inside us and makes it visible. My art is urban, post-traumatic and layered, and it invites you to connect with the world around you and the world inside you.
